Speech-language pathologist abroad: your routes compared
The highest English bar, two countries without a statutory register and a master's rule in Ontario: five routes for an overseas-trained SLP, compared.

Language is your clinical tool, so regulators hold it to a higher standard than for any other profession we file for. That one fact shapes a speech-language pathologist’s plans more than any other.
The rest of the picture is just as uneven. Two of the five countries have no statutory register for the profession at all, and one province reads the level of your degree before anything else.
The highest English bar of our twelve
The HCPC says it plainly: speech and language therapists face higher minimum English scores than every other profession it registers. Its IELTS minimum is 8.0 with no element below 7.5; the speech and language OET needs 1800 with no element below 400.

Ireland’s board sets the same IELTS level, 8.0 overall with no element below 7.5. Its speech pathology OET asks for a B at 400 in three components and a B at 350 in the fourth.

If your training was in English, you may meet an exemption instead. Check that before you book anything, because a test taken below the line does not help the file.
Who decides, country by country
United Kingdom: the HCPC
You map your training against the Standards of proficiency for speech and language therapists. Both titles, speech and language therapist and speech therapist, are protected.

Ireland: the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board
CORU recognises your qualification, then registers you. Speech and language therapy is not on CORU’s Fast Track list of commonly aligned qualifications, so every overseas file takes the full recognition route.

Australia: Speech Pathology Australia
There is no Ahpra board. Our registry records Speech Pathology Australia’s overseas certification as the route, and its certification as the standard employers and visa assessments use.

That makes the association’s own published requirements the first document to read for Australia, rather than anything on Ahpra’s site.
New Zealand: NZSTA
Speech-language therapy is self-regulated in New Zealand through the national association, NZSTA. Most employers expect NZSTA registration before they hire.

Canada: a provincial college
In Ontario, CASLPO assesses international applicants against its Academic Equivalency Framework. If you are eligible, you write the national Canadian Entry to Practice exam through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada, then register.

Ontario’s English rule works differently from the UK’s. Completing your professional master’s in English meets it outright; otherwise CASLPO wants scores equivalent to CLB 9, such as IELTS 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in speaking, reading and writing, all from the same test.

Two countries without a statutory register
In Australia and New Zealand, the body that admits you is a professional association, not a government regulator. That changes what an outcome means.
New Zealand’s association uses a Mutual Recognition Agreement for members trained in and credentialed by ASHA, SAC, RCSLT, IASLT or Speech Pathology Australia. Everyone else goes through its Qualifications Approval Process, where an IELTS Academic score of 7 in all four modules is the minimum. Below it, the file goes no further.

Membership can carry conditions on scope, such as “not dysphagia trained”. And there is no second chance through an appeal:
The decision of the qualifications approval committee is final. Applicants may not appeal the decision.

So the New Zealand file has to be right the first time, with dysphagia training, practice hours and professional development written down in full.
The Canadian catch: degree level
To be registered in Ontario as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist, you must have completed a professional master’s degree in the field.

A BASLP alone does not meet that rule. If you hold an MASLP, CASLPO wants your syllabi organised into four files by knowledge area, a summary of your clinical practicum, and verification of your registration. New registrants complete a period of mentored practice.

What the demand data shows
Speech pathologist is rated Shortage in all eight Australian states and territories on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List. New Zealand lists Speech Language Therapist at Tier 1 on its Green List.

The UK makes the role eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa under SOC 2223, and the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan names it among the greatest allied health shortfalls. Ireland lists it as a critical skill, and Canada includes NOC 31112 in its Express Entry healthcare category.

HCPC registrants who joined through the international route

Only 1,223 UK speech and language therapists had joined through the international route at the April 2024 snapshot, against a register of over twenty thousand today. Shortage lists and a small international intake sit side by side, and the English bar is one plain reason why.

Which route suits whom
- Your IELTS is already at 8.0 or close. The UK and Ireland are both open to a paper assessment.
- You hold a master’s degree. Ontario becomes a real option; with a bachelor’s alone, it is not.
- You studied and practised in English. Read each body’s exemptions before booking a test; the UK, Ireland and Ontario each publish their own.
- New Zealand or Australia. Read the association’s own rules closely, since there is no statutory appeal to fall back on in New Zealand.
None of these is a ruling on your own file. Each body makes that decision.

What to do first

- Write down your dysphagia training and supervised hours, signed by the supervisor.
- Keep a record of your continuing professional development from now on.

What we do
How Credentis Global helps with this route
You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for your file.
Your fit, read before anything is filed
we read your degree, transcripts and experience against the regulator’s published standard first, so you know where the file is strong and where it needs evidence.
Every document, in the order the regulator reads it
Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.
One portal, and a person who answers
Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.
We prepare and file. The regulator decides.
Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.
One specialist owns your file
The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
