Podiatrist abroad: your routes compared
Chiropodist or podiatrist: how five regulators register an internationally trained podiatrist, an Australian exam not yet running, and a New Zealand link.

Podiatry is a small profession with an unusually tangled vocabulary. Depending on the country, you are a podiatrist, a chiropodist, or both at once.
Before choosing a country, it helps to know which word the register uses, and what each of the five regulators will actually ask you to prove.
Chiropodist, podiatrist, or both
The UK register lists the profession as chiropodists and podiatrists, and protects both titles. Ireland’s CORU recognises qualifications under “Podiatrist/Chiropodist”.

Ontario goes further. Its college registers new members as chiropodists only:
As of July 1993, no new members will be registered in the podiatrist class.

So in Ontario, a podiatrist trained abroad applies for the chiropody scope. The name on your degree does not change; the register you join does.
What each register asks
| Country | Who decides | How your training is tested |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | HCPC | Mapping against its standards of proficiency |
| Ireland | CORU’s Podiatrists Registration Board | Recognition against Irish standards |
| Australia | Podiatry Board of Australia, via Ahpra | A portfolio, and an exam if found “relevant” |
| New Zealand | Podiatrists Board of New Zealand | A desktop assessment, a possible practical, and a cultural exam |
| Canada (Ontario) | College of Chiropodists of Ontario | A three-part registration examination |

The UK register can also carry annotations on top of the base registration, such as independent prescribing or podiatric surgery. The UK and Ireland both accept the podiatry OET. Ireland’s Fast Track Pathway lists UK, Spanish and Maltese qualifications, so a degree from anywhere else goes through the full recognition route.

In New Zealand, the board’s desktop assessment reads your course book and the syllabus for each subject. If it needs more, a practical assessment follows at Auckland University of Technology. Everyone sits the board’s Cultural Open Book Exam.

Ontario’s exam has three parts: core competencies, jurisprudence and an OSCE. Before that, the college compares your programme with the Michener Institute’s chiropody programme, and asks you to contact it to confirm eligibility first.

Ontario’s document list holds a surprise for applicants still abroad. It asks for proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or authorisation under Canada’s immigration law to practise, and a Canadian police check, alongside your transcripts and a clinical internship form sent directly by the institution or practitioner who certifies it.

English minimums vary as much as the routes. New Zealand wants IELTS 7 in every band and overall, and allows a One Skill Retake for a single band. Ontario names the tests it accepts but publishes no minimum scores on its page, so ask the college before you book.

Australia’s exam that is not running yet
Australia’s board assesses your qualification portfolio itself, on form PNAQ-70. It checks that the qualification is recognised by a registration body, has been through external quality assurance, and sits at a level comparable to an Australian bachelor’s degree.
There are three outcomes: substantially equivalent, relevant, or not qualified. A “relevant” result means passing the National Podiatry Examination before general registration, and the board states that the examination is not yet available.

That is a real gap in the direct route. Until the exam runs, a “relevant” outcome has nowhere published to go.
New Zealand, then Australia
Australia’s board does publish another way in:
If you are a podiatrist with current registration with the Podiatry Board of New Zealand and hold a current New Zealand practising certificate, you can apply for general registration as a podiatrist in Australia.

For an overseas-trained podiatrist who wants Australia, that makes New Zealand worth reading first. Its route ends with an Annual Practising Certificate, which needs a current Basic Life Support certificate that includes anaphylaxis.

One line in New Zealand’s guide is easy to misread. UK-qualified, HCPC-registered podiatrists can skip sending transcripts and course content. That is for UK degrees; a degree from elsewhere registered with the HCPC still needs them.

What the demand data shows
Podiatrist is rated Shortage in all eight Australian states and territories on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List, and is a Tier 1 role on New Zealand’s Green List.

The UK lists it for the Health and Care Worker visa under SOC 2256, and the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan counts podiatry among the greatest allied health shortfalls. Ireland lists Podiatrist / Chiropodist as a critical skill, and Canada includes NOC 31209 in its Express Entry healthcare category.

First-time registrants in 2024/25: domestic and international
Unit: practitioners
| Category | International | Domestic, incl. new graduates |
|---|---|---|
| Physiotherapy | 1,760 | 2,365 |
| Occupational therapy | 516 | 2,273 |
| Medical radiation practice | 302 | 963 |
| Optometry | 27 | 410 |
| Podiatry | 81 | 140 |
Look at the podiatry bar. In 2024/25, Australia registered 81 internationally qualified podiatrists for the first time beside 140 domestic ones, a far larger overseas share than optometry or occupational therapy.

Which route suits whom
- A paper route, one country. The UK and Ireland map your training against standards.
- Australia as the end point. Compare the direct portfolio, with its missing exam, against registering in New Zealand first.
- Practical and cultural exams do not worry you. New Zealand and Ontario test you in person.
- Ontario specifically. Check that you can show the immigration status the college lists, because it sits on the application checklist rather than at the end.
These describe the published routes. Each regulator decides on the evidence in front of it.

What to do first
- Ask your college for a course book and a syllabus for every subject you took.
- Get a letter confirming your clinical internship, its length and the clinics you worked in.
- Collect evidence of registration from every place you have practised.
- Decide whether Australia is the end goal, because that changes where you start.

What we do
How Credentis Global helps with this route
You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for your file.
Your fit, read before anything is filed
we read your degree, transcripts and experience against the regulator’s published standard first, so you know where the file is strong and where it needs evidence.
Every document, in the order the regulator reads it
Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.
One portal, and a person who answers
Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.
We prepare and file. The regulator decides.
Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.
One specialist owns your file
The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
