Radiographer to Canada: the provincial college route, step by step

CAMRT's IEMRT assessment for an overseas radiographer: where to apply by province, the expert review, the certification exam, then provincial steps.

By Credentis Global4 min read

A radiographer at work beside a view of Toronto, labelled radiographer to Canada.

A radiographer planning for Canada usually asks which exam to sit. The better first question is where you will live, because the answer changes who receives your application.

Canada’s national body for medical radiation technologists, CAMRT, runs the assessment for internationally educated technologists in most provinces. In three provinces, you apply to the provincial regulator instead. This post sets out CAMRT’s process for radiological technology, step by step, and marks where the province takes over.

Step one is a decision, not a form

CAMRT’s process starts by asking where you intend to practise. If it is Ontario, Alberta or Québec, you apply to that province’s regulatory authority. Everywhere else, you apply to CAMRT directly.

CAMRT does not describe the Ontario, Alberta or Québec routes in detail; it points applicants to those regulators. If one of those provinces is your target, read its regulator’s own pages before you prepare anything else.

Our registry rates the Canadian route for radiographers Medium-hard. In its own words, that means a real standalone exam or multi-stage assessment with meaningful failure risk.

The application for assessment

If CAMRT is your assessor, you submit its Application for Assessment with the documents on its IEMRT checklist:

  • The Application for Assessment and the IEMRT Applicant Document Checklist
  • Your diploma or degree certificate, notarized
  • Your official transcript of marks, notarized
  • Your curriculum or course outline
  • A Clinical Assessment Checklist
  • A confirmation of employment letter
  • A letter of reference
  • Language fluency evidence, if it applies to you

Notice the word notarized. That is a specific form of certification, and it may not be the same as copies you have had attested for other purposes. Check what CAMRT accepts before you pay for copies you cannot use.

The employment letter and the reference are easy to leave until last. Ask for them early, and ask each writer to name your role, the equipment you used and the kinds of examination you performed, with dates.

The expert review

CAMRT first checks that the file is complete. It then sends it to an expert reviewer in your discipline, radiological technology.

The reviewer’s question is substantial similarity: does your education match the entry-to-practice competency required of a graduate of a Canadian accredited programme? The reference is CAMRT’s Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile for radiological technology.

Source: camrt.ca · Assessment Process · 2026-10-04

This is why the curriculum and the Clinical Assessment Checklist matter more than the certificate. The reviewer needs to see what you were taught, in which modalities, and what you were assessed as able to do. A course outline that lists only subject titles leaves the reviewer guessing.

What the reviewer can decide

The finding is either a yes or a set of reasons. In CAMRT’s words, the positive outcome reads:

The expert reviewer will determine that: You are eligible to apply to write the CAMRT certification exam and you can proceed to apply for upcoming exam sessions.

Source: camrt.ca · Assessment Process · 2026-10-04

If the answer is no, the reviewer explains why the requirements are not met. That is not final:

Should you be denied eligibility on your initial assessment, you may gather additional supporting documents for re-submission.

Read the reasons closely. They tell you exactly which evidence to add.

Language fluency

You need language evidence only if your medical radiation technology programme, theory and clinical, was not taught in English or French. If it was taught in English, evidence from your institution of English instruction and assessment is accepted.

Source: camrt.ca · Language Fluency Requirements · 2026-10-04

Where a test is needed, CAMRT lists several. IELTS Academic or General Training needs 6 overall with a Speaking score of at least 6, and TOEFL iBT needs 73 overall with Speaking at 21 or more. CELPIP, PTE, MELA and the French TEF and TCF are also listed with their own minimums.

For radiographers taught in English, a letter from the college confirming English-medium teaching and assessment will be the simpler route. Ask for it on letterhead, signed and dated.

The certification exam, then the province

Once found eligible, you apply to write the CAMRT certification exam. After certification, you complete whatever registration requirements your province applies.

Where immigration fits

Medical radiation technologists sit in the Express Entry healthcare category, under NOC 32121.

What to do first

  • Decide on a province, and check whether it is Ontario, Alberta or Québec
  • Ask your college for a detailed curriculum with modalities and clinical components
  • Find out how to get your diploma and transcript notarized in a form CAMRT accepts
  • Request an English-medium instruction letter from your college
  • Gather an employment confirmation letter and a reference
  • Read CAMRT’s Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile for radiological technology

Quick answers

The short version

Which documents do I need to prepare?

The regulator names: Application for Assessment & IEMRT Applicant Document Checklist; Diploma or degree certificate (notarized); Official transcript of marks (notarized); Curriculum or course outline; Clinical Assessment Checklist; Confirmation of employment letter.

What is the application measured against?

The regulator names: CAMRT Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile (radiological technology).

What English language evidence is needed?

Evidence of language fluency is required if the medical radiation technology programme (theory and clinical) was not conducted in English or French; evidence from the institution of English or French instruction and assessment is accepted.

What happens after the regulator decides?

The expert reviewer finds the applicant eligible to apply for the certification exam or gives reasons why requirements are not met; refused applicants may resubmit with additional supporting documents.

What we do

How Credentis Global helps with this route

You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for a radiographer in Canada.

  1. Province first, then the national exam body

Canada licenses province by province. Once your province is settled, we prepare the credential file for its college alongside what the national exam body asks for.

  2. Every document, in the order the regulator reads it

Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.

  3. One portal, and a person who answers

Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.

  4. We prepare and file. The regulator decides.

Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.

  5. One specialist owns your file

The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
