Podiatrist to Canada: the provincial college route, step by step

In Ontario an internationally trained podiatrist registers as a chiropodist: the College's evaluation, its three-part exam, and the documents to gather first.

By Credentis Global4 min read

A podiatrist at work beside a view of Toronto, labelled podiatrist to Canada.

If you trained as a podiatrist outside Canada and are looking at Ontario, start with a word you may not use at home: chiropodist. It is the title under which Ontario registers new foot-care practitioners today.

That is not a downgrade of your training. It is how Ontario’s law is written, and your application has to be built around it. This post uses Ontario’s college as the worked example, because Canada licenses each profession province by province.

Province first, and why the title changes

Canada has one immigration system and a separate regulator in each province. We use the College of Chiropodists of Ontario as a representative college; if you choose another province, its own regulator sets the rules.

In Ontario, the podiatrist class closed to new members long ago. The College puts it in one line:

As of July 1993, no new members will be registered in the podiatrist class.

So new registrants join under the chiropody scope, and the College describes no separate podiatrist route for new applicants.

Our registry rates the Canadian route for podiatrists Medium-hard. In its own words, that means a real standalone exam or multi-stage assessment with meaningful failure risk.

Before you apply: contact the College

Because your programme was not approved by the College, you use its route for applicants from a non-approved programme. The College’s first step is unusual: contact it before you apply, to confirm you are eligible to write its Registration Examination.

Treat that conversation as part of the application. Have your degree, transcript and clinical record in front of you, so the College can answer on the facts.

The application and its documents

You complete the application forms and send the documents the College asks for. Several must come directly from the institution or person who issues them:

  • The College’s certification form for your clinical experience or internship, sent by the certifying institution or practitioner
  • An official transcript of your chiropody or podiatry programme, sent by the institution
  • Official transcripts of any other academic programmes
  • Official evidence of registration with a licensing body, if you have practised elsewhere
  • Your CV and a copy of your graduation diploma
  • A copy of your birth certificate
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or authorisation to practise under Canada’s immigration law
  • A Canadian police criminal record check (Level 1)

Note the last two items. They assume you are already in Canada or have immigration status. Read them early, because they shape the order of your whole plan.

How your programme is judged

Your academic record goes for a third-party evaluation. It is weighed against the programme requirement in Ontario’s Registration Regulation and compared with the Michener Institute Chiropody Program. The regulation itself sets the test:

The applicant must have successfully completed a post-secondary program approved by the Council whose curriculum includes courses in health sciences, chiropodial sciences, humanities and clinical education that, in the opinion of the Council, are relevant to the scope of practice of the profession.

Those four headings are a useful way to sort your own transcript before anyone else does. Put each subject you studied under one of them, and see where the evidence is thin.

The Registrar and the Committee

The Registrar reviews your completed application. Where the requirements are unclear, or conditions may apply, the Registrar refers it to the Registration Committee. A panel of that Committee decides after you have had the chance to make written submissions.

If you disagree, you can have the decision reviewed by the Health Professions Review and Appeal Board, which is separate from the College.

The Registration Examination

The exam has three components, and you must pass all of them:

  1. A Core Competencies Exam
  2. A Jurisprudence Exam
  3. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Source: cocoo.on.ca · About the Registration Examination · 2026-10-04

The College’s Profile of Competencies (2022) describes what a registered member must be able to do. Read it before you prepare for the exam.

Language

You must show proficiency in English or French, through education, registration status, testing or experience. The College accepts CELPIP (General), IELTS (General and Academic), TEF, TCF and PTE, with all component scores achieved in one complete attempt. Its page names the tests but does not state minimum scores, so ask the College for them directly.

What to do first

  • Decide on a province, and find its foot-care regulator
  • If Ontario, contact the College to confirm your eligibility to write the exam
  • Ask your college how it sends official transcripts directly abroad
  • Get your clinical internship certified on the College’s own form
  • Sort your subjects under the four headings in Ontario’s regulation
  • Ask the College for its minimum language test scores before you book

The regulator names: Profile of Competencies Required of the Members of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario (2022); Registration Regulation s. 4(1) 1 (approved post-secondary programme); Evaluation Criteria Regarding Chiropody and Podiatry Educational Program Reviews (comparison with the Michener Institute Chiropody Program).

What English language evidence is needed?

Proficiency in English or French must be shown, through education, registration status, language proficiency testing or experience. Accepted tests: CELPIP (General), IELTS (General and Academic), TEF, TCF and PTE; all component scores must be achieved in one complete attempt.

What happens after the regulator decides?

A panel of the Registration Committee decides on referred applications after the applicant has had the chance to make written submissions; an applicant who disagrees may have the application reviewed by the Health Professions Review and Appeal Board, which is separate from the College.

What we do

How Credentis Global helps with this route

You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for a podiatrist in Canada.

  1. Province first, then the national exam body

Canada licenses province by province. Once your province is settled, we prepare the credential file for its college alongside what the national exam body asks for.

  2. Every document, in the order the regulator reads it

Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.

  3. One portal, and a person who answers

Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.

  4. We prepare and file. The regulator decides.

Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.

  5. One specialist owns your file

The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
