Podiatrist to the UK: the HCPC route, step by step

How an overseas-trained podiatrist joins the HCPC register as a chiropodist/podiatrist: eligibility, certified documents, the mapping, English and the decision.

A podiatrist at work beside a view of London, labelled podiatrist to UK.

Very few overseas-trained podiatrists have joined the UK register through its international route. The route is open to them; it is simply little used, and the HCPC’s own figures show how small the group is.

If you are one of them, you will be working through a process the HCPC uses for every profession it regulates. Nothing in it is specific to podiatry except the standard you are measured against. This post takes you through it in order.

Two titles, one register

The HCPC registers the profession as chiropodists and podiatrists. Both titles are protected in the UK, so neither can be used until you are on the register.

The register also carries annotations for podiatrists who hold extra entitlements: independent and supplementary prescribing, podiatric surgery, and the administration and sale or supply of prescription-only medicines. These are additions to a registration, not part of your first application, so do not let them complicate it.

Here is how small the international group is.

Three eligibility conditions

The international route is for people who trained and qualified outside the UK, in a qualification that relates to an HCPC profession, and who have never been registered with the HCPC.

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Eligibility to apply for registration · 2026-10-04

Our registry rates the route Medium. In its own words, that means document review plus a moderate assessment step, such as syllabus or portfolio scrutiny.

Preparing what you will upload

The HCPC asks for five things:

  • Proof of identity and address
  • The course information form, with your professional qualification certificate
  • A certificate of English language proficiency
  • The standards of proficiency mapping document
  • A declaration

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Documents you need to prepare and certify · 2026-10-04

Each copy must be certified by a person of standing in the community. A document not in English needs a certified copy of an official translation. Every upload must be machine-readable, so scan cleanly and avoid photographs of paper.

The course information form is where your podiatry training is described. Gather your syllabus, transcripts and clinical placement record before you begin it; the form is far easier to complete from documents than from memory.

The application, in the HCPC’s order

You create an account and start a new international application. You complete your details, your qualification, your professional experience, your registration and memberships, your English evidence, the mapping document and the declarations. Then you submit.

Mapping your training to the podiatry standards

The HCPC assesses you against its Standards of proficiency for chiropodists and podiatrists. The mapping document is where you show, standard by standard, how your education and practice meet them.

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Standards of proficiency - Chiropodists / podiatrists · 2026-10-04

Be concrete. Where a standard describes a clinical skill, point to the subject that taught it, the placement where you practised it, and the work you have done with it since. Where a standard concerns professional conduct, communication or safety, draw on real situations from your practice rather than general statements.

Write it in your own words. The HCPC runs plagiarism and AI checks on applications, and a mapping that reads like everyone else’s helps no one. A mapping that cites your own syllabus by subject name and your own experience letters by employer is far easier for an assessor to follow.

English for podiatrists

Unless your first qualifying degree came from a country on the HCPC’s list of English-speaking countries, you need a test taken at an official centre. For podiatrists, IELTS Academic or General needs 7.0 with no element below 6.5, and OET (Podiatry) needs 1400 with no element below 300. TOEFL iBT is also accepted at the HCPC’s stated scores.

After you submit

The HCPC checks that the file is complete and properly certified, runs its plagiarism and AI checks, assesses your education, training and experience, and verifies what you told it.

Its first decision is one of three. You may be accepted to the register. You may be asked to take a test of competence, a structured professional discussion with two registered professionals. Or you may be refused, in which case the HCPC sends its reasons and a Record of Assessment. You can reapply, and a panel decision can be appealed.

What to do first

  • Confirm you meet all three eligibility conditions
  • Download the Standards of proficiency for chiropodists and podiatrists
  • Collect your syllabus, transcripts and clinical placement record
  • Draft the mapping in your own words, standard by standard
  • Arrange certification with a person of standing, and scan cleanly
  • Book an HCPC-accepted English test at an official centre

What we do

How Credentis Global helps with this route

You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for a podiatrist in United Kingdom.

  1. Mapped to the HCPC’s standards

On the HCPC’s international route your degree, transcripts and syllabus are read against its Standards of Proficiency. we map them line by line before the application is opened.

  2. Every document, in the order the regulator reads it

Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.

  3. One portal, and a person who answers

Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.

  4. We prepare and file. The regulator decides.

Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.

  5. One specialist owns your file

The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
