Operating department practitioner to the UK: the HCPC route, step by step

ODP is a UK title with few direct equivalents abroad. How the HCPC reads theatre and anaesthesia training from overseas, and the visa position to know first.

A operating department practitioner at work beside a view of London, labelled operating department practitioner to UK.

Few people trained outside the UK graduate with the title operating department practitioner. It is a UK profession, and our registry records it as one with no direct equivalent in most other countries. If you work in operating theatres, in anaesthesia or recovery, the question is not whether your title matches. It is whether your training matches the role.

That makes this route different from the others on our site. The HCPC is the only regulator in our registry that registers the title, so the UK is the one country this post can cover. Here is how its international route works for you.

What the role is, in the HCPC’s words

The HCPC describes operating department practitioners as people who:

provide individualised care and skilled support alongside medical and nursing colleagues during the anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phases

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Professions and protected titles · 2026-10-04

Read that as a checklist. Anaesthetic, surgical, recovery: three phases. Your evidence has to show each, with the hours and the supervision behind it. Training that covered only one phase in depth is a gap the mapping document has to face honestly.

That is the register you would join: an established UK profession in its own right, not a subset of another one.

Operating department practitioner is a protected title, and the standard you are measured against is the Standards of Proficiency for Operating Department Practitioners.

The visa position, before you invest

For operating department practitioners, the Health and Care Worker visa is open only to people extending or switching; it is closed to new applicants.

We put this before the steps on purpose. HCPC registration is a separate decision from immigration, and an HCPC registration stands on its own. But how you would come to work in the UK is a question you should answer, under the general framework and case by case, before you spend on the registration file.

Eligibility

The international route is for applicants who trained and qualified outside the UK, in one of the HCPC’s professions, and who have not been registered with it before.

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Eligibility to apply for registration · 2026-10-04

“In one of the HCPC’s professions” is the hard part for a theatre technologist trained overseas. Your qualification has to relate to operating department practice as the HCPC understands it. That is what the mapping document exists to show. If your course had a different name, keep it exactly as printed and let the content do the work: the HCPC reads what you were trained to do, and the mapping is where you show it.

The file

The HCPC asks every international applicant to prepare proof of identity and address, a course information form with the qualification certificate, a certificate of English, the standards of proficiency mapping document and a declaration.

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Documents you need to prepare and certify · 2026-10-04

For an ODP file, we would build the mapping around the three phases:

  • Anaesthetic: the equipment you prepared and checked, the airway support you gave, the patients you prepared
  • Surgical: your scrub and circulating work, instrument and swab counts, sterile practice
  • Recovery: the post-operative care you gave, and the handover you were responsible for

Under each, point to the subject, the rotation or the job that proves it, and the document in your file that shows it. Every copy is certified by a person of standing in the community; translations need a certified official translation.

English, without OET

The HCPC does not list an OET test for operating department practitioners. You can use IELTS, Academic or General, at 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5, or TOEFL iBT at its minimums for the date you sit it. Tests must be taken at an official centre.

Filing and the decision

You create an account, start an international application, complete each section and submit. The HCPC checks the file, runs plagiarism and AI checks, assesses your education, training and experience, and verifies what you supplied.

The first decision is successful, a test of competence, or unsuccessful. A test of competence is a structured professional discussion with two registered professionals. If you are refused, you receive reasons and a record of assessment, and you may appeal a panel decision or reapply.

Operating department practitioners were one of the smallest groups on the register to have joined through the international route at the last count with a split, so expect to meet fewer people who have walked this exact path before you.

What to do first

  • Read the HCPC’s description of the role and the ODP standards, and mark the three phases in your own training
  • Ask your institute for a course information letter showing anaesthesia, theatre and recovery hours separately
  • Ask each hospital for an experience letter naming the theatres, specialties and phases you worked in
  • Work out your visa position under the general framework before you file
