Medical social worker abroad: where your registration can lead
The one route our registry records for an internationally trained medical social worker, Ireland's CORU, and why the other four countries are not on it yet.

Most of our profession overviews compare five countries. This one compares one, and explains the other four honestly.
For a medical social worker trained overseas, our registry records a single registration route: Ireland. That is not because the other countries have no social workers. It is because we only describe a route once we have read the regulator’s own pages for it.
One route, recorded in full
Ireland registers social workers through CORU, the Health and Social Care Professionals Council, and its Social Workers Registration Board. Social work is one of the professions CORU regulates by law.

One detail matters before anything else. CORU has no separate register for medical social workers. You apply as a social worker, against the Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers, and your hospital experience is evidence within that file, not a title of its own.

How CORU decides
The route starts with eligibility. You must be entitled to practise in at least one country, generally the one where you qualified. If social work is not a regulated profession there, CORU asks for proof of professional practice instead.

You then build the file on CORU’s portal. Your university, the competent authority and, where relevant, your employer sign and stamp verification forms. CORU marks the file complete only when every third-party verification has arrived, and two assessors, one from practice and one from education, recommend a decision to the board.

What happens if the board finds a gap
If your qualification does not align to the Standards of Proficiency for your profession you will be required to complete a Compensation Measure, which may be a Period of Adaptation (POA) or an Aptitude Test.

The standards are grouped into five domains: professional autonomy and accountability; communication and teamwork; safety and quality; professional development; and professional knowledge and skills. A gap usually shows up where a domain has no document behind it, not where the training was missing.

For English, CORU names no OET for social workers. The usual evidence is IELTS Academic at 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or one of its exemptions, such as a university letter confirming your qualification and placements were taught and assessed in English.

The documents CORU names
CORU’s checklist for international applicants is long, and several items come from other people rather than from you:
- Certified copies of your identity, your degree certificates and your official transcripts
- A certified description of course content, which for social work should show your field placements
- Certified evidence of your eligibility to practise
- Verification forms completed by your university and by the competent authority, and by an employer if relevant
- A statutory declaration signed under oath, and consent to background checks
- The eVetting invitation form (NVB1) and, if relevant, criminal clearance certificates
- Certified English translations of anything not in English, and your English language evidence

The third-party forms are where files stall. Ask early, and ask the right office.
Why the other four are not recorded
United Kingdom. Social workers in England are registered by Social Work England, not the HCPC. We have not researched that body’s route, so we do not offer it.

Canada. Our guidance notes show how one province works: Ontario’s college registers social workers generally, after the Canadian Association of Social Workers evaluates the degree. That evaluation reads only the academic side:
Note that the evaluation is purely academic in nature and does not consider work or volunteer experience.

It is not yet a route in our registry, and each province has its own college.
New Zealand and Australia. Our registry lists a social workers’ board, the SWRB, among New Zealand’s regulators, but holds no guidance note on its overseas route. Ahpra’s national boards, as our registry lists them, do not include social work. We have recorded no registration route into either country, so we make no claim about one.

What the demand data shows
Social worker is on Ireland’s Critical Skills Occupations List. Outside Ireland it is a Tier 1 Green List role in New Zealand, rated Shortage on Australia’s 2025 list, eligible for the UK Health and Care Worker visa under SOC 2461, and in Canada’s Express Entry healthcare category as NOC 41300.

Those are demand signals, not registration routes. A list can name your occupation while the register behind it is one we have not yet mapped.

Where an Irish registration can lead
On its own terms, an Irish registration is the destination: it is the licence to practise as a social worker in Ireland. Our registry records no onward chain from it into another country for this profession, and we will not suggest one we cannot source.
What it does give you is registered practice under a statutory regulator, documented year by year. If you later apply somewhere else, that record is evidence you can show. Whether it counts there is for that country’s regulator to decide.

What to do first
- Ask your university for the syllabus of your MSW batch and a letter confirming your field placements and the language of teaching.
- Get an experience letter from each hospital describing your caseload, teams and duties.
- Find out whether a regulator or council where you trained can confirm your eligibility to practise.
- Check that your name matches across your passport, degree and letters.

What we do
How Credentis Global helps with this route
You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for your file.
Your fit, read before anything is filed
we read your degree, transcripts and experience against the regulator’s published standard first, so you know where the file is strong and where it needs evidence.
Every document, in the order the regulator reads it
Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.
One portal, and a person who answers
Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.
We prepare and file. The regulator decides.
Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.
One specialist owns your file
The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
