Dietitian abroad: your routes compared

Paper assessment or exams: how the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada each register an internationally trained dietitian, and where routes connect.

By Credentis Global5 min read

A dietitian at work, labelled Dietitian abroad, with the five destination countries listed beneath.

Dietetics splits the five countries cleanly in two. Some read your training on paper and register you if it meets their standard. Others want you to sit exams, whatever your paperwork says.

Knowing which is which, before you choose, saves you preparing for the wrong kind of test.

Paper routes and exam routes

Country Who decides What kind of route
United Kingdom HCPC Document assessment against its standards
Ireland CORU’s Dietitians Registration Board Recognition, then registration
Australia Dietitians Australia, a professional association Dietetic Skills Recognition
New Zealand Dietitians Board Depends on where you are registered now
Canada Your province’s college Assessments and a national exam

Our registry rates the Australian and New Zealand routes Hard, and the UK and Irish ones Medium. The difference is mostly the exams.

Country by country

United Kingdom

The HCPC assesses you against its Standards of proficiency for dietitians, and both spellings, Dietitian and Dietician, are protected titles. English is IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or the dietary OET at 1400 with nothing below 300.

Source: hcpc-uk.org · Standards of proficiency - Dietitians · Certificate of English language proficiency · 2026-10-04

The HCPC’s first decision on a dietitian’s file can be successful, unsuccessful, or a request for a test of competence. A test of competence is a structured professional discussion with two registered professionals, not a sit-down paper.

Ireland

CORU recognises your qualification against its Standards of Proficiency for Dietitians before it registers you. Where training falls short, the board can set a compensation measure: a period of adaptation or an aptitude test.

Source: coru.ie · Compensation Measures · 2026-10-04

The yardstick behind that judgement is the board’s own Criteria for Education and Training Programmes, the same document Irish dietetics courses are approved against. A clinical assessor and an education assessor read your file against it before the board decides.

Australia

Dietetics is not regulated through Ahpra. Our registry records Dietitians Australia’s Dietetic Skills Recognition as the route, and its Accredited Practising Dietitian credential as the standard employers and visa assessments look for.

New Zealand

The Dietitians Board sorts overseas dietitians into four pathways. Which one you are on depends on where you are registered today, as the next section explains. Everyone starts in a provisional scope, working under supervision.

Canada

Registration is provincial. The College of Dietitians of Ontario, as one example, runs Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition: a WES report, then a knowledge exam (KCAT), a performance-based assessment, a critical care nutrition course and the national CDRE.

The PLAR process will directly assess your current knowledge and skills, compared to the national standards.

Falling short at the KCAT or the performance-based assessment is not the end of the file there. The college allows rewrites within set limits, or gap training and further study. English can be shown through education in English or French, or a test such as IELTS General at 6 in every skill.

How your current register shapes New Zealand

New Zealand is the one country here where an existing registration changes the route itself.

Overseas trained dietitians who have worked as registered dietitians in the United Kingdom or South Africa can be registered in New Zealand if they meet all the requirements.

Source: dietitiansboard.org.nz · Overseas Trained Dietitians · 2026-10-04

The board calls that Straight to Registration. If you are registered in Ireland or Canada instead, you go Straight to Examinations. If you hold neither, you apply for recognition of your qualification and then sit both exams: the Dietitians Australia multiple-choice exam and the board’s own OSCE.

Source: dietitiansboard.org.nz · Overseas Trained Dietitians · Registration Policy · 2026-10-04

Every pathway shares the same core tests. The board wants training of the length it sets, recent practice as a dietitian in the country where you are registered, and its English level: IELTS 7.5 overall with at least 7 in each band, or an A or B in all four OET sections.

So an HCPC registration with real practice behind it is a genuine head start for New Zealand. Registering in the UK only to move on straight away is not, because the board reads the practice, not just the certificate.

What the demand data shows

Dietitian, listed as Dietician, is a Tier 1 role on New Zealand’s Green List and on Ireland’s Critical Skills Occupations List. Australia rates it Shortage on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List, and Canada includes NOC 31121 in its Express Entry healthcare category.

The UK is the exception. Dietitian is not on the Health and Care Worker visa list, so a UK registration does not by itself point to that visa.

CORU recognised 88 international dietitians in 2025. That is a small number beside physiotherapy or social work, which tells you the Irish board sees relatively few files of this kind each year.

Which route suits whom

  • You would rather prove yourself on paper. The UK and Ireland assess documents against standards, without a standing exam.
  • New Zealand is the goal and you can work in the UK first. Registered UK practice opens the board’s most direct pathway.
  • You are comfortable with exams. Canada and New Zealand’s general route test knowledge and performance directly.
  • Australia is the goal. Start from Dietitians Australia’s own requirements, since no statutory board decides.

These are the routes as each body publishes them. Which one fits you depends on your file, and the regulator makes that call.

What to do first

  1. Ask your college for the syllabus of your batch, with the internship hours in clinical, community and food service settings.
  2. Gather your degree, every transcript and any postgraduate dietetics qualification.
  3. Request experience letters that describe your caseload, not just your dates.
  4. Pick the country first, then the English test at its level.

The Route Finder below has your route’s fees and timelines.

What we do

How Credentis Global helps with this route

You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for your file.

  1. Your fit, read before anything is filed

we read your degree, transcripts and experience against the regulator’s published standard first, so you know where the file is strong and where it needs evidence.

  2. Every document, in the order the regulator reads it

Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.

  3. One portal, and a person who answers

Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.

  4. We prepare and file. The regulator decides.

Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.

  5. One specialist owns your file

The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
