Allied health in New Zealand: who registers you
One board per profession, registration then a practising certificate, the Green List tiers and the physiotherapy chain that starts in the UK or Ireland.

New Zealand has no single health regulator. Each profession has its own responsible authority, with its own standards, its own forms and its own English rules.
That sounds like more work, and sometimes it is. But it also means each board’s route is written for one profession only, and several are unusually clear about who they accept and how.
One board for each profession
Under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act, the government names a responsible authority for each regulated profession. For the professions on this site, that means the Physiotherapy Board, the Occupational Therapy Board, the Medical Radiation Technologists Board, the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board, the Medical Sciences Council, the Dietitians Board and the Podiatrists Board.

Our registry also lists the Social Workers Registration Board among New Zealand’s regulators, though we hold no guidance note on its overseas route yet.

Speech-language therapy is the exception. It is self-regulated through NZSTA, the national association, and most employers expect NZSTA registration before they hire.

Registration, then a practising certificate
In New Zealand, recognition and registration happen inside one board decision, but registration is not the end. Most boards’ pages make a separate practising certificate a condition of working.
Several start overseas-trained practitioners in a supervised or provisional scope. Medical laboratory scientists are provisionally registered and supervised until a satisfactory final supervisor report. Dietitians start in a provisional scope; provisional optometrists may not prescribe.

Cultural competence is built into almost every route. Boards ask for completion certificates from named courses, such as the Ngā Paerewa Te Tiriti eLearning modules or the Mauriora courses, and the Podiatrists Board sets its own open-book exam.

The physiotherapy chain
Physiotherapy is where New Zealand connects most clearly to the other countries we file in. The Physiotherapy Board’s International Express Pathway is for applicants who:
currently hold unrestricted registration as a physiotherapist in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, or South Africa,

Express applications are checked for completeness and eligibility, then go to the Registrar for approval. Everyone else uses the International General Pathway, where the board assesses the curriculum of your primary degree against the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds.

So an unrestricted HCPC or CORU registration, even one earned on a degree from outside the UK or Ireland, is exactly what the Express Pathway asks for. Our registry records the next link too: a New Zealand physiotherapy registration can lead to Australia through trans-Tasman mutual recognition.

The Green List tiers
Immigration New Zealand’s Green List sorts roles into tiers, and Tier 1 is straight to residence. Physiotherapist, occupational therapist, medical imaging technologist, medical radiation therapist, medical laboratory scientist, dietician, optometrist, dispensing optician, speech language therapist, social worker and podiatrist are all Tier 1.

Two of our professions sit outside that. The anaesthetic technician, nearest equivalent to an operating department practitioner, is Tier 1. Social care workers are not on the Green List; a separate Care Workforce visa applies.

A Green List tier describes a visa framework. It is not a job offer, and the visa still depends on one.
What the immigration figures show
Straight to Residence and Work to Residence approvals
Unit: applications approved
| Category | Straight to Residence | Green List Work to Residence |
|---|---|---|
| 2023/24 | 6,287 | 28 |
| 2024/25 | 6,034 | 472 |
| 2025/26 | 4,342 | 1,150 |
Straight to Residence approvals, across all occupations, fell from 6,287 in 2023/24 to 4,342 in 2025/26. Green List Work to Residence approvals rose from 28 to 1,150 over the same years, as that route matured. Both counts cover every occupation on the list, not health roles alone.

Most boards also publish exemptions, for example for a qualification taught and assessed in English in a recognised country. Check yours before you book.
What happens after a refusal differs too. The optical board allows reconsideration and an appeal to the District Court; NZSTA’s committee decision is final.

What every applicant gathers
The boards differ in detail, but most ask for the same core set:
- Certified identity documents, and evidence of any name change
- Your qualification certificate, transcript and, for a full assessment, the syllabus
- Good standing from every regulator you have been registered with, often sent directly
- Police or criminal conviction checks from the countries the board names
- References and a CV, sometimes on the board’s own template
- English evidence at that board’s level, which varies more here than anywhere else
- A cultural competency certificate

Board facts were read on each board’s own site on 4 October 2026, and Green List facts on 22 September 2026. The charted figures are under Figures, and who decides is on our New Zealand regulators page.
What to do first
- Find your own board, and read its English policy before booking a test.
- Request good standing letters early; several boards want them sent straight from the issuer.
- Order police certificates for each country the board lists.
- If you are a physiotherapist, decide whether to register in the UK or Ireland first.

What we do
How Credentis Global helps with this route
You trained. We file. The regulator decides. Here is what that means for your file.
Prepared to your own board’s standard
In New Zealand each profession has its own board. we prepare the file to that board’s published standard and in its own terms.
Every document, in the order the regulator reads it
Each item is checked against the regulator’s own list: names matched to your passport, hours in writing, copies certified by the person the list names.
One portal, and a person who answers
Upload your documents, see every stage of the file and message us in one place. The person who replies is the specialist preparing your file.
We prepare and file. The regulator decides.
Your application goes in from your own regulator account with every page prepared, and every query is drafted against the regulator’s exact question.
One specialist owns your file
The specialist who reads your documents builds the file and answers the regulator’s queries. You always know who has it, and you pay the regulator directly.
