Occupational therapist to the UK: the HCPC route, step by step
The HCPC's international route for an internationally trained occupational therapist, read alongside the latest visa and application figures, step by step.

Before the steps, the context. Overseas applications to the UK’s health regulator have come down from their peak, and the official figures show it. The door is still open, and the registration route behind it has not changed.
We would rather you saw the figures first and made the decision with them in front of you. Then the route itself, in the HCPC’s order, from eligibility to its first decision.
What the figures show
HCPC registration applications: UK and international
Unit: applications received
| Category | International | UK |
|---|---|---|
| 2022-23 | 13,250 | 15,702 |
| 2023-24 | 13,756 | 18,433 |
| 2024-25 | 10,113 | 19,672 |
International applications to the HCPC, across all its professions, fell in 2024-25 while UK applications kept rising.
Health and Care Worker visas granted for our roles
Unit: visas granted
| Category | Main applicants, year to June 2026 |
|---|---|
| Medical radiographers | 204 |
| Occupational therapists | 71 |
| Physiotherapists | 52 |
| Speech and language therapists | 45 |
| Optometrists | 29 |
| Podiatrists | 6 |
In the year to June 2026, occupational therapists received the second-highest number of Health and Care Worker visas among the roles we serve, behind medical radiographers, but the counts for every role are small.
Occupational therapist remains an eligible occupation for that visa, under SOC code 2222.

Taken together, the figures say the UK is still recruiting occupational therapists from overseas, at a lower level than at its peak. None of that changes how the HCPC reads your application. Registration and immigration are separate decisions. The visa side is the general framework, applied case by case.
One route for every HCPC profession
The HCPC’s international route is the same for all the professions it regulates. It is for people who trained and qualified outside the UK and have not been on the HCPC register before. Occupational therapist is a protected title.

Your training is measured against the Standards of Proficiency for Occupational Therapists.

The five things you prepare
The HCPC names five:
- Proof of identity and address
- A course information form and your professional qualification certificate
- A certificate of English language proficiency
- A standards of proficiency mapping document
- A declaration

Every copy needs certifying by a person of standing in the community. Anything not in English needs a certified copy of an official translation. Uploads must be machine-readable, so scan cleanly and avoid photographs of documents.
Mapping OT practice to the standards
The mapping document is where an occupational therapist’s file is won or lost. The standards describe what a UK occupational therapist must be able to do. Your job is to show where your training and practice did each of those things.
Many therapists’ experience is concentrated in one or two areas, such as paediatrics or neurology. If yours leans one way, say so, and show the evidence you do have from the other areas, including your internship rotations. A mapping document that claims equal depth everywhere is harder to believe than one that is honest about where your depth lies.
A structure that works: take one standard at a time; say in a sentence or two what you did that meets it; name where it came from, whether a subject, a rotation or a job; and point to the document in your file that proves it. The assessor should never have to search for the evidence behind a claim.
Write it yourself. The HCPC runs plagiarism and AI checks on applications.

English: the OT version of OET
The HCPC accepts OET in its Occupational therapy version at 1400, with no element below 300. It also accepts IELTS, Academic or General, at 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5, and TOEFL iBT at its stated minimums. Tests must be taken at an official centre.
If you choose OET, book the Occupational therapy version specifically. The HCPC lists OET by profession, and a version written for another profession is not the one it names for you.

Filing, checks and the first decision
You create an account, start the international application and complete its sections: your details, qualification, experience, registration and memberships, English, the mapping document and declarations. Then you submit.

The HCPC checks that the file is complete and correctly certified, assesses your education, training and experience, and verifies what you told it. Its first decision is one of three: successful, a test of competence, or unsuccessful.
Source: hcpc-uk.org · Possible outcomes of your international application ('first decision') · 2026-10-04
The test of competence is a structured professional discussion with two registered professionals. If you are refused, the HCPC sends its reasons and a record of assessment.
All applicants and registrants have the right to appeal decisions made by a panel.

What to do first
- Read the Standards of Proficiency for Occupational Therapists and list where your evidence is thin
- Ask your college for a course information letter with subject hours and rotations
- Gather experience letters naming client groups and interventions
- Book OET Occupational therapy or IELTS at an official centre
- Draft your mapping document one standard at a time, in your own words, before you open the online form
