Dispensing optician to the UK: the GOC route, step by step

Dispensing opticians register with the GOC, not the HCPC. Its route for opticians who trained abroad, from self-assessment to the qualifying exams.

A dispensing optician at work beside a view of London, labelled dispensing optician to UK.

Start with the regulator, because many people get it wrong. Most allied health professions in the UK register with the HCPC. Dispensing opticians do not. They register with the General Optical Council, a separate statutory regulator with its own route and its own rules.

The GOC’s route for overseas-qualified dispensing opticians is longer than most people expect. It does not end with an assessment letter. It can run through further training, a supervised pre-qualification period and the UK’s own professional exams. Here is the sequence, in the GOC’s order.

Who decides

The General Optical Council registers optometrists and dispensing opticians across the UK. Its page for international dispensing opticians sets out the route this post follows.

Our registry records the GOC as a separate regulator from the HCPC and rates this route Medium.

Before you apply: three checks

The GOC asks three things before anything else:

  1. A relevant qualification in dispensing, gained outside the UK
  2. Recent practice: its requirement for recent, unsupervised practice after you qualified
  3. English, at the IELTS level it sets

You then complete the GOC’s self-assessment form. If you appear eligible, the GOC emails you an application form and the details of every document it needs.

That last point matters. The GOC does not publish the full document list for this route on its website; it sends it in the application pack. Any checklist you see elsewhere is a guess until you have the pack.

Verification, then scrutiny

Your qualifications are verified through the Qualification Check platform. You then email the completed application form and supporting documents to the GOC, and its staff check that the application is complete.

The assessment

This is the step that decides how long the rest of the route will be.

Our assessors will map your qualifications and experience against the GOC’s dispensing optician core competencies (the UK standards of competence).

The assessors advise whether you need further academic training first. You may also be invited to an interview. The more precisely your documents describe what you were taught and what you practised, the less the assessors have to infer. If you are invited to interview, the conversation is likely to start from those same documents, so know your own file well enough to talk through any line of it.

Further training and the PQP

After the assessment, the route continues in the UK:

  • Complete any further academic training the assessors require
  • Register with an institute that provides the Pre-Qualification Period, the PQP: Anglia Ruskin University, the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, Bradford College or City and Islington College
  • Arrange a work placement with registered supervision
  • Register with the GOC as a student
  • Complete the theoretical examinations and the PQP

The qualifying exams, then full registration

The final step is the professional qualifying examinations, held at ABDO for a level 6 qualification or at Anglia Ruskin University for a level 5 one. Once you pass, the GOC says you meet its requirements and can apply for full registration.

English: one test, no alternatives

The GOC accepts only an official IELTS Academic, or IELTS for UKVI (Academic), taken in a centre. It asks for 7.0 overall, at least 6.0 in each section, and 7.0 in speaking. Online IELTS is not accepted, and neither is any other English test.

Note that the speaking minimum is a full point above the floor for the other sections. Prepare for it as its own skill, with practice that sounds like a fitting or a frame consultation, not only general conversation.

Two things to weigh before you start

The visa route. For dispensing opticians, the Health and Care Worker visa is open only to people extending or switching; it is closed to new applicants.

That does not change the GOC’s process, which is about registration, not immigration. It does change how you plan to work in the UK while you complete the PQP, and that is a question for the general immigration framework, applied case by case.

The size of the register.

The GOC’s register of dispensing opticians is slightly smaller than five years ago while optometrists grew, which tells you about the profession’s size in the UK, not about how any single application is read.

What to do first

  • Complete the GOC’s self-assessment form and keep a copy of every answer
  • Ask your institute for a course description that separates theory from supervised dispensing
  • Get written evidence of your unsupervised practice since you qualified
  • Book IELTS Academic at a test centre, aiming for the speaking score from the start
