Dietitian to Australia: the Dietitians Australia route, step by step
Australia assesses an overseas-trained dietitian through Dietitians Australia, not an Ahpra board. The stages our registry records, and what to gather.

Most allied health routes into Australia run through Ahpra and a national board. Dietetics does not. If you trained as a dietitian overseas and you search for “the Ahpra dietitian board”, you will not find one, and that confuses a lot of people before they have even started.
The body that matters is a professional association, Dietitians Australia. This post sets out what our registry records about its route, why we rate it Hard, and what you can gather before you spend anything.
An association decides, not a statutory board
Ahpra runs registration for five of the professions we serve, through their national boards. Dietetics, speech pathology and laboratory science sit outside that system. For dietitians, the assessing body is Dietitians Australia.

Our registry records the consequence plainly: there is no statutory Ahpra board for dietitians, and the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential that Dietitians Australia awards is the standard employers and the visa system look for.

That changes one practical thing. Ahpra’s published registrant figures do not count dietitians, because dietitians are not on its register. When you read a chart of “registered practitioners in Australia”, your profession is not in it.
The route our registry records
Our registry records the overseas route as Dietetic Skills Recognition, the DSR, in three stages: an assessment, a multiple-choice exam and an oral exam.

One caution before you plan around that. The Dietitians Australia schedule our registry cites was valid only to 31 March 2026, and we have not yet written a cited guidance note from Dietitians Australia’s own current pages. Treat the three stages as the shape of the route, and confirm the current detail with Dietitians Australia before you commit.
There is independent confirmation that the multiple-choice exam is a live part of the system. New Zealand’s Dietitians Board sends some overseas-trained dietitians to the Dietitians Australia MCQ examination as part of its own pathway.

Stage by stage
The assessment
The first stage reads your training. Expect the questions every dietetics assessor asks: how long the course ran, how much of it was nutrition and dietetics rather than general science, and how much supervised practice you completed, in which settings.
A BSc in Food and Nutrition and an MSc in Dietetics can look similar on a transcript and very different to an assessor. The syllabus and the placement record are what tell them apart.
The multiple-choice exam
The second stage tests knowledge on paper. It is a standalone exam, so it is a separate piece of preparation, not something the assessment carries you through.
The oral exam
The third stage tests how you reason aloud through practice scenarios. Dietitians who have worked mainly in one setting, such as a hospital diet kitchen or a weight-management clinic, often find this the stage where gaps show.
Why the registry rates it Hard
Our registry rates this route Hard. In its own words, a Hard route requires passing a significant standalone exam or exam series, with real resit risk.

We would rather say that now than after you have paid for a first stage. The registry calls the Australian and New Zealand dietetics processes genuinely Hard, not quick wins. That is not a reason to rule Australia out. It is a reason to prepare the exams as their own project.
Demand, and the visa side
Dietitian is rated Shortage on Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List and sits on the Core Skills Occupation List.

Permanent Migration Program planning levels
Unit: places
| Category | Total program | Skill stream |
|---|---|---|
| 2022–23 | 195,000 | 142,400 |
| 2023–24 | 190,000 | 137,100 |

| 2026–27 | 185,000 | 132,240 |
These are the places Australia plans each year across its permanent programme; they are targets set by government, not outcomes, and they are not broken down by profession.
Australia’s skilled visa framework is the general one published by the Department of Home Affairs. It describes the system, not your case, and rules are applied case by case.

Documents to gather
None of these needs a decision about the route. All of them take time to obtain from the country where you trained:
- Your degree certificates and the transcripts for every year, for each qualification you hold
- The syllabus for your years, showing nutrition and dietetics subjects separately from general science, with hours
- A record of your supervised practice: hospital, community and food-service placements, with dates and hours
- An experience letter from each employer, naming the patient groups and the clinical work
- Your passport, with your name spelt exactly as on everything else
Every assessing body asks for English evidence. Dietitians Australia sets its own requirement; check the test and the level it accepts before you book one.
What to do first
- Read Dietitians Australia’s current DSR guidance and note the stages it lists today
- Ask your college for the syllabus that applied to your batch, with hours
- Write down every placement you completed while the supervisors can still confirm it
- Check your name across every document, and start any correction now
